When I think of the goodness of Jesus and all He’s done for me; my soul cries out HALLELUJAH! I praise God for saving me. Isn’t it a great thing to be saved? To know your Lord and savior on a personal level… is the most amazing relationship you could ever have in your life. I’m sure I can speak for everyone when I say, “If it had not been for the Lord on our side we would be consumed”. Consumed and over whelmed by so many other things, thoughts and problems. I am so excited to be on the Lords side, where I can be loved and taught the word of God. This brings me to our Sunday worship service.
What a wonderful time we had in the house of the Lord on Sunday, June 13, 2010 as a newly ordained minister was birthed. Minister Naima Williams was nothing short of incredible as she stepped up to the podium and brought forth the word of God. It was a wonderful birth to experience. It was as if she had been preaching for years as the word of God poured from her soul. Her topic: “Before You Go, You Must First Leave” Genesis 12:1-4. It gives me great pleasure to give you the Shekinah Sunday Highlights:
Before You Go, You Must FIRST Leave!
Bishop Rouson preached a trilogy over the past three Sunday’s called Pursue, Overtake and Recover all. He was telling us that we must pursue what God has for us, over take the enemy and then we will recover all that God has for us. I am here to tell you today that before we can pursue what God has for us, before we can overtake the enemy and be for we can recover all… Before we go, we must first leave. We must leave our present status, leave or comfort zone and follow God. We must be willing to move when God says move just like Abraham. Let me give you a little background on Abraham…Abram was the descendent of Noah (10th generation) and grew up in a city named Ur of the Chaldeans, which was located approximately 100 miles southeast of Babylon. Now Ur of the Chaldeans was a city known for idol worship and their chief god was Sin, believed to be the god of the moon according to Mesopotamian mythology, as well as the god of gods and father of gods. The two places where Sin worship was extremely prominent (“chief seats”) were Ur of the Chaldeans (Abram’s native place) and Harran, which was also a place of significance. The Bible says in Hebrews 11:31 that Abram’s father, Terah, set out to leave Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan (later referred to as the Promised Land); however, Terah stopped midway his journey at a place called Harran (same place) and SETTLED there. The Bible doesn’t say why Abram’s father settled in Harran, but it does make it a point to mention that he “settled” (and later died) there.
He settled. Sometimes we set goals in education and personal goals and the longer it takes for them to come to pass, we begin to settle. I believe we’ve all done that at one time for one thing or the other….. Tell your neighbor” Don’t settle. From promise to promise fulfilled we have to work; it takes faith, obedience and trust. Whatever the blessing is; He has prepared it especially for you. Before you go; you must first leave. God told Abraham to leave his father’s house, his kindred. The city he was from was chief city of Idol worship and the chief god of sin. When God speaks of kindred he is speaking of the people around you…. There are times when you must move from the people around you, bad company promotes bad character. God needed to pull Abram out of this country so he could get a direct connection to him. We must renew our mind and separate ourselves in order to be used of God. Abram was chosen just as we were chosen, but we must have a willingness to move past what we think we know and move towards God.
God has given us a great destiny but we must realize that we have to work in order to receive the things of God. There is a place that we dwell in that we must leave from and it is called “The comfort zone” What is the comfort zone- A comfort zone is a type of mental conditioning that causes a person to create and operate mental boundaries. Such boundaries create an unfounded sense of security. We live in a society today when we are told to be comfortable. The name itself is deceiving. It makes you feel that everything in this zone is comfortable, but just because you are comfortable with it does not mean that it is of God. Let me give you a few examples:
1. An abused woman may be comfortable in her situation not wanting to leave because she loves her abuser or because she is afraid. When in reality he could kill her at any given moment. She could live a happy and successful life with someone who loves her but because of her fear she stays in what she thinks is her comfort zone.
2. A person stuck on a dead end job may be comfortable and afraid to move forward. But they are limited in what they can do, afraid to try new things. They limit their own success.
Scripture says if you suffer with me you will reign with me. The people of Ur worshiped the god Sin and that same god is being worshiped today. God is considered evil and evil is considered good Society is saying “do it” According to II Corinthians 4:4 the god of this age has blinded the mind of the believers. We have been blinded by many things in our lives and to be honest when most of us found Christ we were at the bottom of the barrel. We worked for freedom, we began to learn how to pray, and we suffered problems in our lives we ran to the church every time the doors opened. Then it starts, the “progression of egression” we begin to step back because we are comfortable. We begin to slow down on pursuing God. What we don’t realize, is that our comfort zone is a zone of false security. Serving God is not comfortable all the time. His word says that if any man comes after me, he must first deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. Denying self is not comfortable; taking up your cross is not comfortable. You cannot find God in your comfort zone. Humility, giving and loving your neighbor are things that are out of our comfort zone.
Inside the comfort zone: Inside the comfort zone are things that you do not need in your life like Self gratification, laziness, false security and doubt. These are things that stunt our growth. We do not need these things in our life if we want to be blessed.
How do we get out of the comfort zone? To pursue, to overtake, and to recover is to OBEY. God wants to show us things that we know not of, but it requires us to get out of the comfort zone. We must obey his word and obey his voice. We must obey the people he put over us. Obey God! God said do it! He did not ask if you want to go… he said go! Everything you desire, every promise will out on the other side of the comfort zone. There are so many things we want to do and the level of comfort that he calls you out of is the level of blessing he will make you.
When you read the bible you will find that when God calls others to do something he calls them out of their comfort zone.
1. Jeremiah – said I am only a child, I can’t speak and God sent him to prophesy to kingdoms.
2. Gideon- Thought that he was the least of all who could not be used of God, but God used him in a mighty way. God had to trust him out of his comfort zone.
3. Esther-Although she was queen she was not exempt from being executed. No one was allowed to go before the King unannounced. She stepped out of her comfort zone, saying “If I perish I perish”
4. Peter- Peter got out of the boat. Most people look at the fact that he began to sink, but I like to look at the fact that he got out of the boat. He trusted God.
5. Jesus- had to come out of the comfort zone of royalty to come down here. He had to come out of the comfort zone of time and lived for 33 years. He did not get the crown in royalty; he received the crown on the cross. He came out of his comfort zone for us, now surely we can come out of our comfort zone or him.
In closing:
There are times when we suffer many things in this life; things that challenge us and make us chose comfort or not. We must remember that the things that God has for us does not come with out work or choice. We must choose this day whom we will serve. When I was in the corporate world it seemed that I had it all. I had a great house, a nice car and fancy clothes. I was the one that everyone would come to for help. But God had a plan for my life that required me to come out of my comfort zone. Before I knew it I had lost everything. And I was starting from scratch. I suffered many things this year that took me out of my comfort zone. I was determined not to give up. I had to fight against bitterness to make it. There were times when my friends were not around for comfort. I had to begin to seek God personally for my self. I had to come out of my comfort zone to receive the blessings he had for me. The spiritual blessing and then the natural blessing will follow. What ever you need today, you wont find it in the comfort zone. It’s on the other side. You must first leave; before you go… you must first leave what you are use to, leave the comfort of gossip, leave the comfort of back biting, abusing others, leave the comfort of false security, and false hope. Begin to trust God and allow him to take you places you’ve never dreamed you could go. Come out of your comfort zone. Because before you go; you must first leave!
